Apple will be acquiring AuthenTec, a security firm that makes fingerprint sensors for mobile devices, for about $356 million. While Apple hasn't disclosed how they will be utilizing AuthenTec's technology, we can expect to see fingerprint authentication on future Mac and iOS products. Many PC laptops and some smartphones already use fingerprint sensors for authentication, so it would be nice for Apple to catch up.
One of AuthenTec's sensors is designed specifically for authentication for mobile wallets. Could Apple be acquiring AuthenTec for that technology? Biometric authentication would certainly lift some concerns regarding mobile wallet security.
